Hexagon set screws are used in nearly all construction, engineering or manufacturing processes in the world. If they aren't used in the finished product such as plastics, these fasteners are used to build the machinery, from which the plastics are extruded. Hexagon bolts are similar in use to the hexagon set screw except that part of the shank of the bolt is not threaded or plain. The shank is plain for a variety of reasons including reducing cost (a very large fully threaded hexagon set screw would cost more to produce) or that part of the bolt could come into contact with another item and during use it could result in wear of that item. i.e. if a spring is wrapped around the a fully threaded set screw, the threads could rub against the spring and slowly erode it - perhaps in the suspension on motor vehicle. They are again widely available in steel, (mild steel & high tensile), stainless steel, brass and the more exotic stainless grades.

Coach Bolts DIN 603
Coach bolts are one of the first ever fasteners to be invented. Manufactured with a square shank under the domed head coach bolts are often used in bolting wood applications. The domed head can be hit with a hammer to sink the square head into the wood, which then allows the user to fasten the bolt without the need to hold the domed end. They are manufactured in both fully threaded and plain shank versions and are widely available in mild steel zinc plated and stainless steel. Specialist sizes or materials such as high tensile coach bolts can be made as required.
