Self Tapping Screws are often used when you don't need, or can't pre drill a hole in the material where you need to insert a fixing / fastener. The reason for this is because self tapping screws have the ability to advance whist turned due to them creating their own thread.
This works by the edges of the screw cutting a new thread as they are driven in to the material such as wooden garden fence post, aluminium and much more. A hole is left for the screw to go into as its own cutting edge drills away the access material.
This type of self tapping screw is often used for a range of jobs and applications, from DIY to surgery because it cuts down the extra work of having to drill before you can screw.
